Day 16: to Littlebeck

Watching the weather report this morning I knew I was in for a very blustery, windy day and wasn’t disappointed 😂

On leaving drizzle started so took off backpack to take out gaiters (wasn’t interested in waterproof trousers as too warm) and glasses fell off my nose onto a paving stone. Of course, they broke. 🤔 Yup, right arm snapped off so lopsided yet again I headed out!! Trip to Specsavers now a necessity when I get home!!!

Down the road, passed the pub to Beggars Bridge. The story behind it is a love story which had a happy ending and built so that no young lovers would be separated by the river swollen by rain.

From there headed into the East Arncliffe Woods and onto road passing Egton Bridge and onto Grosmont.

It was smaller than I expected but as I had loads of time, visited the Sidings and loco shed, popping into the station gift shop of course!! Saw Wainwright and couldn’t resist getting him to join my menagerie 😁

Headed down to a coffee shop after popping into the oldest co-op, for a coffee scone jam and cream. Delicious!!

Now to face the steep, very, very, steep climb out of Grosmont.

Was pleased to see a steam train come into the station and had to have a gander.

But the eventually had to confront the climb. They weren’t kidding when they said it’s a calf-propping climb up to the Sleighs Moor!! On and on it went and then the wind hit. Sometimes so strong I felt like I was being pushed into the road. Halfway up there was a bench so took 5 to admire the view to Whitby!!

And on I continued- up and over – relief but still no respite from the wind. It was so strong it whipped the map from my hand and it flew over the heather, there was no way I was going to get that back!! Luckily I knew it was just a question of walking to bridlepath and follow it down into Littlebeck.

Came to my pickup point before I realised, Littlebeck Methodist Church. Was collected by taxi and taken to Ruswarp Hall – more like a hotel than a B&B. Impressed!! Even has an honesty bar but no brandy so not for me 😂😂 (probably a good thing!!).

Arranged to be picked up at 8.45am and checked in. Now to explore.

Found the Bridge Inn so of course the obligatory G&B was ordered.

Food could only be ordered at 5pm but chef must have heard my tummy rumbling and said she’s quiet with nothing to do so if wanted something she’d make it. Pleased as punch ordered the chicken lasagne. Fat and full wandered back to accommodation – an early night for me as tomorrow although only 11miles could be challenging with 60mph winds predicted!!

I have to have one last challenge 😂😂😂
